The Holiday=Thanksgiving. Every year we distribute turkeys and nonperishable food for side dishes to more than 300 families that have housing and an oven in which to cook a turkey or chicken. We have some donors who donate nonperishable food and money to purchase turkeys, but our need is greater than the amounts of food that are received. We can use canned food, such as green beans, corn, cranberries, squash, as well as beans, rice, and salsa. Next Thursday and Friday afternoon we will be bagging the nonperishable foods and during Thanksgiving week we will distribute the turkeys, fresh pies (donated by a local school), and the side dishes. So, we need: (1) monetary donations to purchase turkeys and chickens; (2) canned food; and (3) dry food, such as beans and rice. Every Day. Although we need these food items to help our clients prepare for Thanksgiving, we also need food to stock our pantry. Every day Moms and Dads come to us for help. Their children are hungry. In these hard economic times, many families we work with are losing their housing because of foreclosures on their landlords’ properties. Others simply can’t afford basic necessities because of loss of jobs or reduction in income. We need to keep healthy basic nonperishable food items, such as canned food and beans and rice, on hand. A BAG OF GROCERIES MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE!

For almost 20 years, the Homeless Prenatal Program has served homeless and poor families in San Francisco. About 2600 families currently come to HPP each year for help. Many are in crisis. Some are the working poor and just need help with diapers or food to tide them over until the next payday.
