'Walrus Whisperer' Accused of Trying to Steal Prized Walrus
A strange story from north of the border, as reported by Granite Broadcasting sister station WKBW in Buffalo, N.Y.
According to the WKBW report:
A worker at nearby Marineland in Ontario, Canada is in hot water after being accused of trying to break into the park and steal a prized walrus. Authorities said that person was upset with park managers for rejecting his idea for a reality show.
Animal Trainer Phillip Demers wanted to be called the "Walrus Whisperer" but amusement park officials did not accept his pitch for the show. When his idea was denied, he broke into the park and attempted to take "Smooshi" the Walrus.
He and his girlfriend also went to the Toronto Newspaper making claims that the park was mistreating the animals. These allegations lead to an intense investigation but no charges were filed against the park. Now, Demers is fighting off a $1.5 million lawsuit. He has yet to file a defense or speak to reporters about the case.
Demers' troubles could be far from over. More lawsuits against him are expected. Park officials claim they have emails proving he harassed and intimidated workers to try and get them to back up his allegations of animal abuse.
