Soccer's Most Popular Player Set to Retire
The world's most popular soccer player is calling it quits.
International soccer star David Beckham announced Thursday that the plans to retire from soccer at the end of the season.
"I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," Beckham said in a statement.
Beckham, who has been playing for Paris Saint-Germain since January, will conclude a 20-year career that includes plenty of notable achievements, including six Premier League tites with Manchester United and a Champions League title.
Beckham made his name in Europe, playing key roles for powerhouse clubs Manchester United (1992-2003) and Real Madrid (2003-07) before becoming the first major European star to leave for the United States and Major League Soccer.
Beckham played for the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2007-2012, a move that boosted the professional league and provided a jolt to the sport in the United States.
During Beckham's five seasons with the Galaxy the team enoyed success winning xxx MLS titles.
